Title 42

Mom's been approved for the Title 42 program.  She gets a $2500 credit on the next bill (if they can get it in by October, otherwise November), a 10% reduction in rent going forward, and a 2% reduction in any rent increase (there apparently is one each January).

She's signing the papers as I type.

That's all they wrote!

I believe we have completed all the major tasks for relocating Connie to NY.
  • Found a new place
  • Moved to new place
  • Sold old place
If no one has any objections or any other outstanding tasks on this project, I'd like to close down this project.

Closed!

Per Barry the Lawyer, "the closing is funded".  The money is being wired to her checking account even as I write this.  I will have Mom cancel all her utilities, homeowner's insurance, etc.

Closing on Tuesday!

We learned a couple of days ago that the buyer was going to be approved by the Board, and the approval apparently came through today.  Lee did a yeoman's job of getting all the documents signed and overnighted to Florida, and  Barry the Lawyer says they are likely to close the sale tomorrow, Tuesday, August 27.

Hooray!

Still no Board approval

Closing is scheduled for Tuesday, but we still do not have Board approval of the buyer.  Barbara says everything is in order.  The lawyer suggested to me it may be because the Buyer is Haitian, but of course he can't prove it.

If this doesn't happen, we go back on the market next week.

I let Mom know earlier.

Laundry Labels, ETC

A lot was accomplished this weekend at Mom's.

All the cartons were unpacked with the exception of the photos, photo albums. These are stacked in the front closet.  Eric - there are a bunch of empty cartons stacked by the door for Alex. If he doesn't want/need them, please let Mom know and she'll get the maintenance guys take them away. Also for Eric - the folding chairs are there for the taking.

Lee and I made a CVS/Bed Bath & Beyond run and got a bunch of things to help settle Mom in (soap dish, toothbrush holder, hamper).  I'm sure she will need more things besides furniture which we will get to as she asks.

I have ordered name tags for Mom's clothes that are peel and stick. It will take awhile before they get to her but she has the Sharpie to use until then.

See you all soon - and some sooner than that.

Telephone

The telephone arrived and has been hooked up.   Mom has phones everywhere.  Because they are ringing in each room, she asked me to shut off the ring amplifier.  It is still connected but is turned off.

By the way, Mom lost her reading glasses (in her bed).  I couldn't find them anywhere.  Whoever visits should look.

Dining room, Internet and phone

Mom isn't satisfied with her dining table companions, so Shelley spoke to Eileen who will in turn talk to Larissa when she's in tomorrow.  Shelley will follow up as well.

For those who might care, Mom now has a wifi access point.  The password is AbbeyRoad. The network name will be obvious when you're here.

Her LOUD ringer box is hooked up.

Since the phone service is only accessible from the cable box, she needs a new cordless system with multiple extensions.   I ordered a V-Tech unit on Amazon which will arrive Saturday: four handsets and an answering machine for $65.  Such a bargain!

Calendar

In case anyone's interested, we found the current month's calendar by going to the Atria website

http://www.atriaseniorliving.com

and then entering this search term into the search box at top:

engage life tanglewood

The July calendar was the third item on the list.  It's direct URL is

http://www.atriaseniorliving.com/library/Calendar/10464-Atria-Tanglewood-calendar.pdf

but I don't know if it changes from month to month.  Clearly, the daily routine doesn't change frequently, so the August calendar is likely to be extremely similar.

Day 1

This post is from Hillary at 9pm.

Lee and I have been sorting and purging and trashing since 10:30 am. I believe we are in good shape. I left mom with twice as many shirts as I purged. She was a bit concerned at first that she wouldn't have anything left to wear. But she's good. Shelley you have stocked her up with lots of great stuff.

Sorry for the delay but I got pulled into the kitchen to finish sorting. So here it is 11:10 and we are done with the kitchen. The Mazda is packed and ready for pickup and the rental is loaded for good will.

So we are ready to collapse and get up bright and early tomorrow. And then on to NYC on Tuesday

Questions? Just ask.

More details

Theresa told me they were able to get a double bed for mom which I think is great. If its comfortable there will be no need for her to buy a new one. Atria will have it made up for her and Debbie has an extra set of double sheets.

Atria provides the emergency neck or bracelet emergency call button (whatever it's called). I'll ask mom which she prefers.

They've brought some living room items into mom's Apt. Debbie will call Theresa directly tomorrow and decide what she wants them to leave and what to take away. She might drop by and look for herself.

I emailed the list of items for mom to bring to everyone. I can't figure out how to put it on the blog.

Wired

Ok, Mom will be connected to what we laughingly call the real world when she arrives on Tuesday.  I just got off the phone with a very nice lady at Cablevision, and they will be thrilled to install the famous Triple Play (phone, TV and Internet) in her apartment on Monday, July 29.   We don't need to actually be there, as Atria will let them in the apartment.  Here's what she's getting:

Phone: unlimited US calling (also Canada, USVI and some other places) and 15 features!  Her new phone number is:

            (516) 284-6495

TV: Economy Package, which includes the two important ones she specified - The Food Network and HGTV - and also

Animal Planet - Animal Planet HD†- Bloomberg TV - Bloomberg TV HD† - Boomerang - Cartoon Network - Cartoon Network HD† -
CNN - CNN HD† - CNN - Headline News - C-SPAN3 - Daystar - Discovery Channel - Discovery Channel HD† - EuroNews - EWTN -
Food Network - Food Network HD† - fuse - fuse - HD† - HGTV - HGTV HD† - History - History HD† - Hub -
MSG Varsity - MSG Varsity HD†- MSNBC - MSNBC HD† - News 12 Traffic and Weather -
News 12 Traffic and Weather HD† - ReelzChannel -
Shalom TV - Telecare - Turner Classic Movies - Turner Classic Movies HD† - TV One - Universal HD† - WE tv - WE tv HD†

I ordered two cable boxes, one for the living room and one for the bedroom.   Mom was very concerned that she have these both.
Internet: not that Mom needs it, but the phone service is VoIP, so it comes along.  I didn't order the wireless modem, but I have some old ones laying around I'll bring over so we can use WiFi when we're visiting.

The installer will need to have a TV and a telephone in the apartment to make sure everything works, and I understand from Debbie's earlier post that you were planning to bring over a small TV along with the other temporary furnishings on the weekend.  Could someone please donate/lend a phone?  It's only needed until Mom's actual phones get there.  She'll probably need a new cordless set, since there's only one outlet - at the cable modem - and I'm sure she wants more than one phone.

Shelley - any thoughts on who I should call at Atria to alert them to this?

Move in information

Nothing is a problem. Here are some answers

1) Ellie is informed about Mom's flight landing time. She thinks mom will be there by 5:00 and will have lots of staff meeting her. I'm doubtful and pressed. No problem getting there late. There will be a key for her at the front desk. Some staff might still be there but paperwork etc can be done the following morning. The Room will be made up. Ellie offered the bed to be made up (again) and I said yes just in case. Debbie, if you end up making the bed Saturday, just tell Theresa or Ellie that we don't need linen. When I talked about Mom's twin bed,Ellie said single. I don't know if single and twin are different or if sheets are different.

2) Ellie said the list of things to bring is just a suggestion. I haven't had a chance to go over it. She does need toiletries and personal items. She also needs to provide her own telephone.

The initial 2 month payment can be put on a credit card if we want but subsequent payments by check only. The payment is due the 1st of the Month with a 5 day grace period. There can be automatic withdrawal if she wants. Scott thinks its a bad idea.

3) furniture or anything else can be brought ahead of time. No problem. Debbie..... Ellie said Saturday is fine. Just go in and talk to the receptionist. They will let you into the room, they provide a cart if you want and they will tell you where you can come in. She said since 109 is so close to the front door they may just let you come in that way. Try asking. Ellie said she would provide some things for the living room "if they have anything around". Should I pursue it? is the bridge table meant to be the temporary kitchen table. They might be able to find something else. Let me know if you just want to bring what you have.

4). We arrange for cable ourselves but Ellie gave me the phone numbers. The television must be there before the cable is installed so Monday is the perfect day. Lee and Debbie plan to deliver the stuff on Saturday and Mom moves in on Tuesday. No one needs to be there. Atria will let them into her apt. Scott will take care of ordering unless you really want to do it Hillary. In that case it's all yours!

5) I forgot to tell Ellie about the furniture delivery date but I will take care of it.

ERIC...... Will you arrange to be there for the furniture delivery?

5) I spoke to mom about coffeemakers. She's allowed Keurig as well as the kind that drips directly into a carafe. After discussion she decided on the Keurig. I can order it on Amazon and have it sent directly to you. With Amazon Prime you'll have it in 2 days. Of course mom wants it there immediately but I did point out to her that there is coffee 24 hours a day in the Cafe. Mom told me AGAIN that they told her they provide a Keurig (which of course they never said) I said if they did, then they don't now! I hope she doesn't ask me again:)

Home Stretch!

What a project team!  Things are moving along smoothly so far. We’re in the home stretch now!

There are a few things we need to get in place before Mom arrives at Atria

Shelley – I think these are things you could speak to your contacts at Atria about:

  1.  Atria should be informed that we have a scheduled arrival date for Mom. Our flight (#1271) on Delta is scheduled to depart at 11:48 and arrive at JFK 2:44 on Tuesday July 30.  Lee will have a car at the airport so we will go directly to Atria from the Airport.
  2. Do you have a list of things that Mom should have with her when she arrives at Atria (paperwork, checkbook, meds, etc)? Please share it so that I can make sure we have everything in place for her.
  3.  It would be best if we could get some random furniture (Arm Chair, Snack Table, TV) over to Atria prior to her arrival, if at all possible.  Is this possible or do we have to wait until July 30th?  See list below and let us know if there are other things she might need.
  4. Cable and phone service – does Atria have the numbers to call to arrange for this?
  5.   Atria should be informed that the movers will arrive with her belongings on August 8 or 9.

If we can get the info about cable and phone service, I will make the call to arrange for service for her.

Eric – please make sure Mom has the title, etc for the car so you can work on the transfer of ownership when it gets to NY. Also, please find out about what needs to be done about returning plates and cancelling the car insurance.

I think someone should be on site with Mom when the movers arrive (Aug 8 or 9) . Lee & Debbie will be on vacation then. Would someone else like to volunteer?

Things needed on site day 1
a.    Snack table/card table
b. Armchair
c.     Television
d.    Coffee maker
e.     Twin size sheets
f.     Does anyone think of something else that should be on site from the start?

Anything else anyone can think of, please let us know.

Hiccup - the update

In our last episode, Barbara the Agent placed a frantic call at 9:30 on Friday night.  It seems our Buyer's Buyer had failed to close on their sale, thereby leaving our Buyer with insufficient funds to complete our sale (cue gothic organ music ...).

It appears that sometime between then and now, our Buyer's Buyer gave our buyer a check for $35,000, which our Buyer promptly deposited in her checking account, this prompting another call from Barbara to yours truly.  So the Buyer now has $76,000 in her checking account, more than enough to buy Mom's condo.  Although, as Barbara made sure to tell me, the check hasn't actually cleared in the account yet ... .

Hiccup

Barbara the Agent just called me.  The buyer was supposed to close on the sale of her place today, which didn't happen for some reason.  It's now allegedly scheduled for Monday.  If for some reason the sale falls through, she won't have enough cash to close on the buy of Mom's condo.  Barbara is very concerned about the situation, enough that she called me at 9:30 on Friday evening.  I guess her agent's nose smells a problem.  There's really nothing to do at this point except to wait until Monday.

If the buyer fails the credit check (which would happen if she doesn't sell), we can and will cancel the contract and put the condo back on the market.

I'll call Mom tomorrow morning to appraise her of the situation.   There's no reason I can think of to change any plans we have.

The Move - update

The updated plan

1)  Hillary and Lee fly down early on Sunday

2)  Movers come on Monday to pack and pick up

3)  We fly out on Tuesday - Delta at 11:36 AM, arriving JFK 2:44 PM

4)  Mom's stuff will be delivered on the 8th or 9th

"The Move" plans

Update on the move.  We've got a plan but we do not have confirmation from the mover yet

1) Selected Suddath (United).  If anyone wants to know the details, let me know.  They are more expensive but will provide more certainty in pickup and delivery (moving is expensive).
2) Plan is to
  - fly down on Saturday the 27th (Mom has circled it on her calendar)
  - purge on Saturday
  - pack on Sunday the 28th including anything going in the car's trunk and anything going direct to Amanda and/or Sophie
  - pickup by mover on Monday the 29th
  - ship Amanda/Sophie stuff
  - fly to NY and move in to Atria on the 30th

Next steps are
1)  confirm dates with mover
2)  book flights

Address Change

Mom's starting to update all of her address to Atria for banks, subscriptions, etc.  She called this morning and asked Shelley if I have her Social Security card, because she wants to change her address there as well.  In case she asks anyone else (she seems to be sharing with all of us lately):

1. She doesn't actually need a SS card, she just needs to know the number (this is true for everyone in almost all cases - this info is right from the SS Administration website)

2. I can get a card mailed to her if she really feels she wants it

3. I will tell her this later (she didn't answer when I called), but I updated her address at SS, effective Aug 15.  I'll adjust the effective date as we learn more.

Medical

1) I spoke to Nurse Amy. She has all the medical info she needs. She already had the list of meds from Salzburg. It wasn't supposed to be part of the evaluation. Amy said Lee told Larissa that Mom is taking 3 different meds but the list from Dr. Salzburg has 9. I just spoke to Mom and solved the mystery. She is taking 3 prescription meds but 9 including her supplements. I told Amy to go with the 9.

2) Amy knew immediately that mom was bumped up to level 2 because she asked for 3 showers a week. That was my fault, I thought she could have 3. Anyway, to stay in level 1 she has someone to help her get dressed every morning and help showering 2x a week. I moved her back to level 1 and just discussed with Mom whether more showers are worth $300/month. She decided to stay at level 1 for the time being and see if she can make it work. If she does move to the next level though, I would see how many more showers a week she can squeeze into the 7hr total. Her decision.

3) Amy thinks Mom has to sign the contract herself when she comes up (which is good) and Lee sign at that point as the guarantor. Scott has a call into Larissa to confirm.

Update on Title 42

This is way more work than it ought to be (although not more than it's worth, assuming Mom gets the 10% discount).

I send Joanne Croty @ Atria (Title: Administrative Assistant) a couple of forms filled out to act as an "interview".  These forms listed all of Mom's assets and all of her income.  The response back was: we need statements or other documentary evidence of the stuff.  So I had Mom mail me whatever statements she had (she appears to have a lot, by the way) but established some online accounts to see if I could shortcut the US Mail.

The short story is I could (on the Internet, no one knows I'm not a 91 year old woman. Or an 87 year old woman, for that matter.)  I got
- Mom's Social Security benefit letter
- The last six months of statements from her checking account at FirstBank Florida (a division of FirstBank Puerto Rico, Member FDIC)
- screen prints of the current status of all the CDs she has at FirstBank (they don't actually issue statements for CDs)

All this was emailed to Joanne.

Mom additionally sent me statements for her checking account at the NY Community Bank (this is what she refers to as AmTrust, I think) and a 1099 for the dividends paid by her shares in JPM Chase.  These checking statements show the monthly deposits from SS, the union pension, the annual distribution from her IRA, and the JPMC pension.

All this was scanned and emailed to Joanne.

Seems pretty evident to me, eh?

Not so fast, kemosabe.

Turns out the screen prints for the CDs were too small for Joanne to read (I had no problem).  So I used my trust print dialog and enlarged the CD screen prints, then emailed them to Joanne.

Just hold on a minute partner.

Turns out I enlarged them too much, cutting off the name of the bank.  Also, I only sent five months of checking statements and they need six.

So I tried again this afternoon, picking an enlargement ratio which isn't too hold, isn't too cold, but is just right.  In the meantime, Joanne sent me a form which Mom (or her POA) needs to sign, which Joanne will them mail to the two banks, asking some officer there to verify all the information.

ARRGGGGHHHH!

News Flash

The condo sale contract is being signed by Mom as I write this.  Closing date is set for Aug 20, and she doesn't need to be there.

Lee/Hillary: the mover guy was just there to look around and prepare an estimate.

We are rolling!

Atria Contract

On the buy side, I think it's in Mom's best interest to sign at the last minute, although I'll call Larissa today and check on that.  I'll also ask he if there are any outstanding issues she has relating to the contract.  And I would vote to accept Lee's gracious offer to be the guarantor.

On the Title 42 (low income housing) stuff, I'll call Joanne today and see where she stands.  I emailed her most of the information she needs last week, and got an envelop of statements from Mom this morning which I need to sort through.

Re: Medical Completion

That last post was from Shelley, not me.  I have no idea why I got credit.

Medical completion

Head Nurse Amy will be back from vacation tomorrow and I will call her. I need to find out if she has a record of Mom's Medication and if not, who do we get it from? I'll also discuss with her trying to reduce Mom's level of care to 1 which is $300 cheaper. I want to know the details which is based on the findings of the Florida evaluation. Amy obviously hasn't read it since she's been on vacation. I'm not optimistic though. On the plus side, level 2 might allow enough room for more showers. I'll know more in the next day or so. I don't believe the level of care affects the contract but we'll check on that too.

Real Estate Update

I spoke to everyone this morning again.  Mom, of course, is nervous about getting the sale done.  Based on Hillary's comments about the move getting done, I let both Mom and Barbara the Agent know that we're ready to sign.

Regarding Barbara: she didn't have the list of items to be left in the contract; I emailed her with the list Hillary posted last week.  The contract needs 30 days to closing, so it will probably be Aug 16 or 17 depending on when she can get over to see Mom.  There's a question from the lawyer about whether there are any outstanding assessments; both Mom and the condo association president don't think so, but the accountant needs to be consulted.  While this sounds silly, the complexity is that each building is a separate legal entity and has it's own financials, so it's not surprising that you need the actual record keeper to know the facts about building 183.

Regarding Barry the Lawyer:  I haven't spoken to him last week and need to make sure he has no other questions about the contract.  I'll also ask him if Mom can not be present at the closing (I'm guessing yes).   I left a message on his machine.

If mom's out before the movers can get there, perhaps we can hire Elourdes to meet the movers?   Whatever they're taking could be left in the den?

Get Ready for Count Down

Good Morning -

Here's  a few items that I thought of last night while  trying to sleep.

  1. I believe that Mom does not have to be at the closing on her FLA unit. When I closed on my house, the owner wasn't there. His attorney had power of attorney to sign for the owner at the closing. Scott - do you know if Mom spoke to her attorney about this?
  2. Lee is contacting movers today and will report back. Scott - if you have a mover recommendation from the realtor, please pass it along.
  3. Lee and I are hoping/expecting to get Mom purged and packed before the end of July (stay tuned for exact timings) That being said, I don't think there is going to be an issue with closing on 8/13.
  4. Eric - we need you to find out what the lead time is to ship the car up north. We also need to know if we can pack anything in the car - trunk only.
  5. Since Mom is moving into a room with a twin bed, we need Twin Size Sheets. Eric - do you have a set you can spare?

The latest game plan for the "purge and pack" is to have Lee and I go down on a Saturday through Tuesday. Fly down Saturday, purge and pack Saturday - Monday. Fly up to NY Tuesday am and move Mom into Atria.

This assumes we can either get a mover to pick up Mom's boxes and lift chair on the Monday we are there or early Tuesday (leaving time for us to make it to a flight early enough in the day to get back to NYC) OR find some way to have her stuff picked up by the movers after she is relocated.  There is a key lockbox on the unit.

That's all for now. Off to work.

Lift Off #2

Lee and I have talked about when we can go to FLA and pack and purge Mom. We need to find a mover. Scott has asked the realtor for a recommendation. Lee will make some calls and see what's out there.

I would like to ideally go down to FLA to pack and purge and then escort Mom to her new home. But this is not definitive.

We'll keep everyone posted on what the timeline looks like for this, when we can get a mover lined up for, when the car can be transported (can the car be shipped with the rest of her stuff since she doesn't have enough for the minimum weight requirement for the large movers)

Good night all.

Inventory

I just had a very detailed discussion with Mom about what is staying and what is going. My opinion is that she only has to list the furniture or fixtures that she is leaving. Anything permanently attached to the walls, ceilings, floor is staying (under counter coffee machine).
Anything in or on the cabinets, closets, etc is coming or getting tossed except for what is listed below.

She has an outstanding question for Eric & Amy - do they want the folding chairs and snack tables she has down there?  If not, we can leave them too unless someone else wants them.

Contract update

I spoke with Barry Lind, the lawyer, this morning.  All seems fine.  He flagged two things which I caught, namely that all the furniture was listed as being included and that the closing date was 8/13.  He told Barbara the Agent to go back and say Mom will itemize the furniture to be left shortly, and suggested the closing date be moved back to 8/31.   He & I discussed a couple of technical issues I had, and it looks like I'm being paranoid.  So the contract is moving apace.

In the meantime, Shelley's busy trying to get the physical exam (or whatever it's called) scheduled for this week.  Once this happens, we'll have a better idea on an achievable schedule.

Financial Update

I've started submitting data to Atria in support of the low income tax rebate.  So far all the stuff from FirstBank Florida (most of her CDs, checking, etc.) and Social Security are done.  I'm waiting for info for the Amtrust accounts.  Mom will have to find some sort of statement for her large holding of JPMC shares, and also identify the deposits in the Amtrust account from her gold-plated pensions, none of which apparently have separate statements.  I asked that she have Elourdes copy the paper and send the copies to me.

They use Zillow to value her condo, which shows as $55k.  Zillow also picked up that it's for sale at an asking price of $65k.

Speaking of which, Barbara the Agent told me today that the credit info for the buyer looks good to her and should pass the condo board.  She will mail both me and Mom's lawyer a copy of the sale contract.

It's amazing the number of identities one can create on the interwebs.

Back from a very relaxing vacation and ready to get Connie moved!

Please let me know if you had any specific tasks that were to be done (forms, evaluation, etc) and if you have completed them or not. If you have not completed them, please let me know when you expect to be done with it.  I'll start the task list for everything.

Thanks.
Your Senior Project Manager.

On again

Mom got them back to 64,500 and said yes.

The bid changed

The bid came back this morning at 62, rather than the 65 from yesterday.  Mom said no, and that she wants the 65 from them (way to go, Mom).  We'll see if they blink.  Changing the bid like this makes me suspicious of doing business with them.  Assuming they come back with 65, my advice to Mom will be to leave the apartment on the market and keep showing it until she has a signed contract with a significant deposit.

We have an offer

$65,000

Anyone have any thoughts?

First potential buyer

Update on the sale ... a Haitian woman came by with her real estate agent to look at the place today.  They got along famously with Elourdes and even gave her a ride home.  Didn't make an offer, however - not surprising.

Sale

Just spoke to Mom ... the agent already has a prospect lined up to come and see the apartment.

On a related note - the seller is required to deliver a complete set of condo docs to the buyer at closing.  Mom has what she has; that is, she may have saved every rule announcement etc. that she's gotten in the last 13 years, but who knows.  The condo association sells complete sets for $150.  The agent advised her to buy a set to avoid any problems.  After discussing it, we agreed she should deliver the pile she has, and if there's a problem at closing, give them the $150 to buy a set themselves.

I'll call her later this afternoon to start filling out the financial aid forms for Atria.

Thanks

Thanks.

Thanks for taking the effort transporting Mom back and forth. I understand how exhausting it is. But isn’t it cool that you get to jump the line at TSA?
I don't mind being the PM for the move. I just want to point out that both Scott and Lee have similar PM experience and could easily handle this piece.
I think we should ask Mom who she wants on the local checking account with her. She should still make such decisions for herself.
As for other banking, the only thing I can think of that she goes into a branch for is any CDs she has, which we will need to find out if she can do this remotely if she has any CDs that will mature after she moves.

Connie's Trip

Mom did well yesterday traveling home, arriving home in good spirits and moving pretty well.  She is very appreciative of everything everyone did all week, and she's excited about her new home Up North.  We spent some time on the way down going through all of the papers that need filling out as part of the move, but she's still a bit daunted by that task.

- She has the signed papers for Barbara the real estate agent and will (I hope) call her today
- I'll email Barbara the condo docs today
- I volunteer to talk her through the financial aid forms over the phone - it's pretty much adding up her assets and her income
- I'll also help her filling out and signing the Atria resident agreement, etc.
- I volunteer Hillary, the experienced and talented PM she is, to create about the task list for the actual physical move
- Shelley volunteered to followed up with Mom and Nurse Amy and make sure all the medical stuff

One of the many things Mom is stressing about is changing bank accounts, etc.  AFAICT, she actually doesn't actually need to do anything with this.   Her bank accounts will all work fine remotely (she Harding goes to the branch now anyway).  We will need a new primary checking account for direct deposit of her income checks, etc., and it should be a joint account with one of us.  JPMC anyone?

My own day was looonnnng.    My 5:40 flight didn't actually lift off until 9:15, and I got home at 1:00 am.

Connie is home

We walked in and there was a message on the machine from Citi about a suspicious $500 charge to a "personal care facility" ... Aka Atria.   Glad they're watching.

Making progress

Ok, we're boarded.  I'm calling it about 40 minutes delayed.

Next update when we land.

Flight delay ...

Our flight is delayed an hour ("could be more, or could be less" - that's the official word) due to a "maintenance issue".  Some are annoyed.  Personally, I'm happy they found it before we took off, rather than after.

Anyway, I'll update our ETA to Oceanside after we board.

Real estate

We met with the agent (Barbara Tenzer 954-235-8224) earlier and the story is mostly good. The market is active and deals are closing.   Her unit is in average condition - not run down, but not brand-spanking new refurbishing - and will probably sell between $55,000 and $60,000.  Mom thought this was reasonable; a nearby similar unit she knows just sold for $59,000.

The fees are high, which is not surmising given how inexpensive the units are. The agent gets $3,000 + 8% (split between the seller and buyer sides), the lawyers get about $1,000 and there are sundry taxes and other fees of about $1,200.  So if it goes for $60k she'll net about $50k.   It's a six month commitment.  Barbara says her fees are higher but she gets the sales done.

We didn't sign the agreement because Mom doesn't have a place to live yet, so we really can't commit to moving out yet in the happy event it actually sells. There's a $1,000 breakup fee if she backs out within some time period, maybe the six months.  So we agreed to see how the ahping trip goes and then decide.  We have the papers all filled out and ready to go.

We also got her hearing aid repaired at Costco.  User error - she took it apart and couldn't get it back together.

Dinner tonight at Outback.

Whaasup

I got down here yesterday and found Mom in good spirits.   We spent some time talking about the Pros and Cons of Atria vs. Bristal;  I think she's got most of the salient points.  She remains very anxious to get the move going.

We sorted through some of her papers and jewelry, and I'll be bringing a load of jewelry to NY to leave.

Today we have a busy schedule: Costco, Publix and a real estate agent will come by.  She's already got dinner planned for tonight (Outback) after going to Toojays last night.

See ya tomorrow.

Conversation this afternoon

I spoke with Mom this afternoon and updated her on our current schedule and plans.

I'll be traveling down to Florida on Sunday 6/23 and bringing her to NY on Tuesday 6/25.  On Monday we'll start Stuff Sorting and also talk to a realtor.

She'll be staying staying the Erics Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

We'll visit Bristal and Atria on Wednesday and Thursday.  I told her that they may ask her to show she can get out of a chair by herself, and walk 100' with her walker.  Both of which she said she can do.
We may visit North Shore Towers on of those afternoons
We may shop for a bed and perhaps other furniture the other afternoon.

Friday I'll take her back home.

At this point she is anxious to get this all done and move up north.

Shopping schedule

Looks like the week of June 24 works best for everyone, so we'll start working on that for now.

Mom's LI shopping trip

Some people go to Milan and Paris to shop.  Some people come to Manhattan.  Mom goes to Lawn Giland.

Here are some thoughts on the logistics and issues.

Visiting these facilities is like doing the college tour.  Visiting when the kids aren't around really misses the point, unless you like seeing buildings that aren't especially well maintained.

We found last time that the places are pretty dead in the afternoon as many of the residents are off-site or in their apartments then. The mornings seem to have more activity.  So it's much more useful to visit them in the morning.   That means we need two days for the visits, as the chance of making it to two in one morning is pretty much nil.  And the visits should be on weekdays, for the same reason - the weekends have no activities, people are out visiting family or the family is visiting them, and generally don't represent life as Mom would experience it most of the time.

I understand that weekdays could be a problem for the working folk amongst us.  Can you make it work?  In any event, Shelley & I would take the tour again.

Mom can't reasonably travel home after spending the morning home shopping.  And there are a couple of other things we might try that day, assuming it goes well and there's a likely decision or even a near term move.  Like furniture shopping, and definitely bed shopping.  Again, if it looks like we might have a decision, picking out the bed so it can be delivered the day before she arrives would be very useful.  A set of sheets, etc.

So a rough schedule might look something like this (I'm obviously open to suggestions, corrections and improvements):

Day 1 - I fly to Florida. We meet with the realtor.  We start the Stuff Sorting process.
Day 2 - more Stuff Sorting.   Meet with or talk to an estate sale type.  Although perhaps leaving the apartment furnished until it's sold is a better idea.  After she moves out, we can finish the cleaning process to make it show as well as possible.
Day 3 - travel to NY.
Day 4 - visit Atria; bed shopping.
Day 5 - visit Bristal; furniture shopping.
Day 6 - I bring her back to Florida.  If possible, I come home as well.

In the meantime, Shelley's having both places send brochures to Mom. She's also going to check on vacancies and ask about a trial residency as well as tours.

I think this could move very quickly. I'd be mildly surprised if her choice of home had no vacancies at all.  Assuming the vacancy they have is not her first choice, she can start in on apartment and then move when her first choice opens up.

Thoughts?

A correction

I updated the Bristal link to reflect the North Woodmere facility at Shelley's suggestion and Debbie's confirmation.  That is the one that Mom visited.

A few comments

Key question:  once Mom gets to NY, where is she going to stay?  I don't know where she could stay except a hotel.  She can stay near us but someone needs to stay with her (I think).  We are happy to take her back to the places (we'd like to see them also), etc. but we need a plan.

As far as the other points Hillary raised, while they are important, I don't think the apartment is a priority.  Until there is a plan for where and when she is moving, selling the apartment is not critical.  She doesn't need the money immediately and she doesn't want to get into a situation where she is 'rushed' out to complete the sale.  Seems unlikely in the current real estate market but you never know.

Before anything is done with the car, it needs to be decided what is going to happen to it.  She certainly doesn't need it.  If it is being sold, why bring it up?  If it is being given to someone who needs a car, that is a different story.  Again, a decision for Mom.

Volunteers of America

So, I'm happy to make the trip and act as escort.  It might make sense to get a few of the other things keyed up in advance in the event that anything can or should be taken care of down there.

Also, I'm sensitive to the restroom-in-transit issue: how would that work if one of the sons were there?
